and Counseling through the Arts), a community-based non-profit organization committed to the development of
youth and adults through arts and cultural programming. MECA makes a unique contribution to Houston’s
cultural scene through their annual series of performances and events. From September 7th to October 8th in
commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month MECA will host the works of Latin American Artist Lorena B.
Fernandez. The closing reception will include a bilingual poetry reading by the artist on October 8th at 7:00 pm.
Fernandez will read poems from her bilingual art and poetry book "How to Exist, an Impractical guide." To learn
more about MECA visit http://www.meca-houston.org/
On the closing reception, Oct. 8th 7pm-9pm, Fernandez will read from her bilingual (English and
Spanish) book "How to Exist, an Impractical Guide" In the book, Fernandez explores the meaning and
reality of everyday existence and the choices she made about how to live her life through poems and
paintings. The book displays the amazing talents of the artist not only in painting but also in poetry writing.
Permeating through the collection of poems and painting is the artist's passion for life, a life that is not
static, but is constantly changing to accommodate new perspectives and new "pieces of the puzzle". In
"How to Exist, an Impractical Guide", it is inspiring to see an artist, healed by art, is now free to use art to
seek and define meaning of her existence and to affirm her creative path! To get the book visit:
